IUI Procedure
Dr. Arya specializes in performing IUI with skill and precision. This quick, outpatient procedure typically takes just 15–20 minutes and is done right here at our convenient Frisco clinic. When you choose Precision IVF, your IUI treatment journey includes the following key steps:
1. Medications for IUI
Depending on your diagnosis, your IUI cycle may involve ovulation-stimulating medications such as Clomid (clomiphene citrate) or Femora (letrozole). These oral medications are typically taken for 5–7 days, starting on day 3 of your menstrual cycle, to encourage the growth and release of eggs.
Clomid boosts FSH and LH hormone levels to support follicle and egg development. Femora works by lowering oestrogen levels, which signals the body to produce more FSH, promoting follicle growth. Your dosage will be tailored to your needs by Dr. Arya.
2. Monitoring Ovulation
For IUI to be effective, it must occur just before or within 24 hours of ovulation — the short window when the egg can be fertilized. Since sperm live longer than eggs, placing sperm early improves the chances of conception.
To precisely time ovulation, we monitor your cycle with a mid-cycle ultrasound and hormone testing. We assess follicle size, uterine lining, and hormone levels (E2 and P4). When a follicle is mature, an hCG “trigger shot” may be used to induce ovulation. IUI is then scheduled 1–2 days later.
You'll receive personalized instructions and 24/7 access to our clinical team for full support throughout your cycle.
3. Sperm Preparation for IUI
A semen sample either from a partner or sperm donor is collected, usually through masturbation. In the lab, the sample is carefully processed using a centrifuge to isolate healthy, motile sperm. The seminal fluid is removed, and the concentrated sperm is suspended in a nutrient-rich medium. This preparation is customized based on sperm quality and count to ensure the best possible outcome for IUI.
4. Next Steps
The IUI procedure takes about 20 minutes and involves placing the prepared sperm directly into the uterus using a thin catheter. This increases the chances of fertilization by bringing sperm closer to the egg in the fallopian tube. After the procedure, you’ll rest briefly before resuming normal activities. Mild spotting for 1–2 days is common.
In some cases, you may be prescribed progesterone supplements (typically vaginal capsules) to support the uterine lining and help with embryo implantation.
Why consider IUI Treatment for Pregnancy
1. Minimally Invasive Procedure
IUI is a quick, in-office treatment that doesn’t require anaesthesia or surgery. It’s a comfortable and low-risk
fertility
option, making it ideal for many patients starting their conception journey.
2. Directly Increases Sperm Reach
By placing specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus, IUI bypasses the cervix and shortens the path to the egg dramatically improving the chances of fertilization.
3. Precisely Timed with Ovulation
Ovulation is closely monitored using ultrasounds and bloodwork. The procedure is then carefully timed—sometimes with the help of an ovulation trigger shot—to ensure sperm meets egg during the most fertile window.
4. Effective for a Range of Fertility Issues
IUI can benefit individuals and couples dealing with:
- Mild male factor infertility (e.g., low sperm count or motility)
- Irregular or absent ovulation
- Unexplained infertility
- Cervical mucus issues
- Same-sex couples or single women using donor sperm
5. A Cost-Effective First Step
Compared to IVF, IUI is significantly more affordable and less invasive. It’s often recommended as an initial treatment before exploring more complex fertility options.
6. Expert, Compassionate Care
Led by Dr. Sushila Arya and team, a double board-certified reproductive endocrinologist, our team guides you with expertise, empathy, and ongoing support from the initial consultation through every step of the IUI treatment for pregnancy.
